Newz Fest!

Eric | September 26, 2005

I haven’t written anything in a while, so Eric the Red Presents: Not-so-Major Newz in Brief:

  • In the style of Michael Newdow, hippie residents of Las Cruces, N.M have filed suit in Federal court to force the town to remove the three crosses from its official emblem. Says the plaintiff:

“The lawsuit alleges the emblem violates the First Amendment by placing religious symbols on public property and spending public money to promote religion. The lawsuit also accuses the city of violating the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by requiring prospective employees to sign job applications that include a religious symbol. Weinbaum and Boyd accuse the city of invading the privacy of their homes with government-sponsored proselytizing. Weinbaum and Boyd said they have been made to feel excluded from public participation in government activities.”

The plaintiffs go on to argue that a town whose name translates as “The Crosses” has no historical basis for placing religious symbols on its emblem. Readers are thus advised to watch for road signs actively oppressing others.

  • The city of Shanghai has released a manual to teach its citizens how to spot fake beggars. Says the article:

“Amid the great army of city vagrants, there is a cadre of professional beggars who prey on the sympathies of citizens,” reads the manual, issued last month by the city’s Civil Affairs Bureau.

“There isn’t a trick they won’t try,” it adds above a drawing of a kindly looking elderly couple forking over cash to a grinning scam artist.”

Nice to see the Chinese capable of pirating something besides DVDs and software……

  • Lynndie England was convicted of of conspiracy, maltreating detainees and committing an indecent act. She was acquitted on a second conspiracy count. She faces 9 years in prison.
  • In a move that was designed to cheat me out of hits from the far right, Cindy Sheehan was arrested outside the White House. According to the text, those arrested will be ticketed and released. Hopefully she will still appear on campus tomorrow night.
  • Citizens for Ethics has released a list of the 13 most corrupt congressmen. Among those on the list:
    • Bill Frist, for violating campaign finance laws.
    • Rick Santorum, who allegedly received tuition at a Virginia school for his children at the expense of taxpayers in his state
    • Maxine Waters, whose family has made millions doing business with comanies benefiting from Ms. Waters official activities

    Hmmmm…..where is Hillary “Ramrod” Clinton?
